How To Select
Countertops For Outdoor Kitchens
It is important that when looking for outdoor kitchen
countertops you choose ones that are both sturdy and made from
a durable material in order that they can stand up to whatever
the weather is likely to throw at them.
Certainly some of the best materials that are now being used
for outdoor kitchen countertops includes such things as
polymer, ceramic tiles, granite, marble, slate and many other
natural stones.
Although polymer is the perfect material for the
construction of outdoor kitchens as it can withstand outside
elements unlike wood or concrete and it does not absorb
moisture. Also polymer is a solid material and because it is
not a laminate or a layered material it will not warp when it
becomes wet. But if you are looking for something that will
really bring your outdoor kitchen a live and blend in with the
look of your garden then I would consider using natural stone
instead.
Below we will look at a number of different natural stone
products that you may well want to consider for using as
countertops in your outdoor kitchen.
1. Slate
This can provide an elegance and sophistication to your
outdoor kitchen countertops. It is a natural material which has
both the strength and durability of both granite and marble yet
does not require constant maintenance and care as these
surfaces do.
Although many people associate slate with a material used
for roofs and walkways it can be an excellent material for use
in a kitchen. This is primarily because it has a low absorption
rate which means that they are more stain resistant and less
likely to be a breding ground for dangerous bacteria.
Also slate is low maintenance and can be kept clean with any
household cleaner but if you wish to keep your outdoor kitchen
countertops protected then use a mineral oil on them. Other
characteristics which may slate an ideal choice for using as
kitchen countertops is they are impervious to stains, heat,
water etc. However, it is important that they are polished
regularly in order to maintain their shine.
2. Granite
This is a hard coarse grained rock and one of the most
beautiful natural stones to be found in the world. It consists
mainly of quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase feldspar
which contribute to the colour of the stone. Usually the
colours are white, pink or light grey however sometimes it may
be dark brown, dark green or black because of the presence of
such minerals as hornblende and biotite mica. The way the
molecules entwine in this stone make it hard, difficult to
damage, and generally impossible to scratch. It is also heat
resitant and durable which makes it another ideal choice for an
outdoor kitchen countertop.
Because granite is so resilient as well as being easy to
clean and maintain it is also very aesthetic so it will sit
naturally both indoors and out. You can either purchase your
countertops in honed (unpolished) or rough textured (flamed) as
well as a smooth glossy finish.
So why not take a trip to your local home improvement store
today and see what types of materials they have available from
which you can make outdoor kitchen countertops from.
