Outdoor Kitchen
Islands - A Compromise In Cost And Flexibility?
One of the most important considerations regarding building
an outdoor kitchen is the type of outdoor kitchen island - also
known as a grilling island - you will have.
This is because the kitchen island will form the basis of
your kitchen. It's used when you prepare and cook your meals.
The kitchen island can also be used as a table for you and your
guests while enjoying the meal. In fact, the kitchen island
provides the look which will characterize your outdoor kitchen.
This article will examine some of the options you can consider
when finalizing the design of the kitchen island.
One way of looking at the outdoor kitchen island is to
compare it to the indoor kitchen equivalent. For example, it
can be installed as a cabinet in the masonry. If you decide to
go for a permanently installed island it is generally custom
built into the masonry. These are generally more expensive but
do offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of design and
materials used. You should try to retain the same character of
your house or garden when choosing the look of the kitchen
island. For example, use the same type of stone or brick which
your house was built from. If you are fortunate enough to have
a pool, consider matching the tiles on the island to the tiles
from your pool.
The other option which is less expensive, is to go on for a
prefabricated kitchen island. In this case you have fewer
options and you are usually limited to the design and materials
of the island's which are available commercially. That said,
there are some very attractive designs available today and the
materials used can be of a very high standard. You might even
be lucky enough to find a prefabricated island which is a very
close match to your existing kitchen or patio design.
So, which option is best for you? A custom built island will
certainly be more expensive but will probably add more o your
home, and will certainly provide greater flexibility. But don't
discount the prefabricated island. There are some outstanding
prefabricated islands available today - both from a design and
material perspective. Perhaps a good compromise is to have a
semi custom prefabricated island. In this case, you select a
base model and then finish off the exterior with material of
your choosing. The best of both worlds - a competitive price
with a custom design!
